Wedding Photography Contest

Score! If you like looking at beautiful wedding photography then I have found the mother load

I stumbled across the Wedding Photography Directory site through an announcement of their WPD 2007 Summer Creative Wedding Photography Contest. Out of over 1500 entries they have narrowed it down to the top 100 images and are asking you to vote on the winner. How better to decide than to get the opinion of the ultimate consumer instead of just a bunch of other photographers.

In addition to the contest, WPD has some well written articles on everything you want to know as you do you homework on the how, when, whats and whys of wedding photography. Unlike some of the large portal sites with four or five generic articles on the topic this site is jam packed with valuable, up to date information.

If like me you like to graze through the beautiful shots you can find a listing of their member’s blogs. Be warned, you could get lost on this site for hours and hours.

Disclaimer: I don’t know any of the photographers that they list in their directory you still have to do your own fact checking; but its still a fun graze.

Rehearsal Dinner Details

This weekend’s wedding was all about the details; the small touches that add up to big impact. Notice the orchid on the place setting at the rehearsal dinner.
The plate of desserts was served with coffee after the plated dessert for the guests to nibble on during the toasts and photo montage. Tomorrow I will post some images from the reception.

Easy Candle Centerpieces

Last week I posted about DIY Centerpieces and I found some great ideas for candlescapes that really show what I was talking about. Great candle centerpieces are a cinch to pull off if you think outside the box and think quantity over quality. Bet you never thought you would here me say that, did you?

I found these on the Better Homes and Gardens Website. Just another example of looking outside the box for unique wedding ideas.

DIY Centerpieces

Those of you that are frequent followers of the Dish know that I am not a huge fan of DIY weddings. Having said that, I also know that there are a ton of brides that are ready to take the hand-made plunge. Centerpieces seem to be a favorite. So here goes…

First my rant. If I see one more lonely little bowl filled with water and one or two floating candle I may just scream. The same goes for a single pillar candle surrounded by rose petals. If you are going to take on this project, how about using a little creativity girls? I am well aware that for most of you saving money is the object, but you are going to have to think outside the box a little for that. Also remember that the standard height rules apply: either tall enough to see under or low enough to see over.

The one on the left I found on Indie Bride: Simple, clean, cheap and easy. If you are going for that urban zen look you can’t beat it. Change the single flower to suit your style. An orchid would be lovely but a rose would look outdated.

The one on the right would work for anything either county or garden. It is simply a flat of wheat grass with flowers in water picks stuck down in it, tie a ribbon around the flat or wrap it in fabric. Easy enough. This one has daisies but change up the fabric and use tulips for spring or for fall use deep colored mums and sprinkle the grass with fall leaves.

We all know that everyone looks better in candle light. If you want to go this route the key is to mass the candles. See if you can order plain white or ivory pillars by the case. Get a case of several different sizes and mix them up on the table. Rent some inexpensive serving trays to put them on and fill in the rest of the tray with stones or coffee beans or even cranberries to fit your mood. Get creative. Tuck a single bloom in among the filler an BOOM, pretty, unique and reasonable inexpensive. Just remember to find out what your venues rules are regarding candles.

Another popular DIY centerpiece is to fill bowls with beautiful fresh fruit. The only problem with that is finding enough pretty fruit the day before your wedding. Plus if you buy that much fruit at the grocery store you may end up paying more that if you had had the florist do standard arrangements. This might help: limit you selection to two or three kinds of fruit that will be in season at the time of your wedding. Arrange with your caterer to order the fruit through their wholesale produce vendor. Rent the bowls. It’s worth a shot.

I would love to see your DIY centerpieces. So send them on.

Just How Over The Top Would You Go?

I have talked before about how it goes when the pros plan their own wedding. Now most people I know in the industry kind of just run off and do it quietly. Occassionally one of us decides that they want to completely blow the top off of every other wedding they have ever planned.

Today I ran across one of those weddings. A planner that does a lot of event at Atlantis in the Bahamas, Harith Wickrema just got married and did he take it to new levels.

Here are a couple of quotes to give you an idea of the level of obsession that sometimes creeps into weddings.

“The dramatic entrance he had planned for his bride — via barge on Atlantis’ serene lagoon — also brought obstacles. Chief among them was getting the barge to glide over the water without the disruptions an engine or propeller could cause. After input from Atlantis’ in-house aquatic experts, Wickrema decided to have two underwater divers guide the barge from beneath. Add to that a surge of mood-setting music and a wash of light atop the water to create a shimmering effect, and “nobody could see how that barge was floating,” he recounts.”

Ummm. Ya. Divers to escort the bridal barge. You have included that haven’t you??? I think the picture is post barge ride

During planning and setup of the complex event, “I was very involved,” the producer says. “I only relinquished my walkie-talkie a half-hour before the ceremony.”

I can’t even comment on that. Not even the worst bridezilla would admit to that

Not Exactly a Dream Wedding

You can file this either under the best laid plans or if you have professionals on your team for heavens sakes LISTEN TO THEM.

This weekend I worked a wedding that was virtually destroyed by the weather. What’s sad is that it didn’t have to be. There was a back up plan but the bride had her “vision” of an outdoor wedding stuck in her head and just would not let it go.

Three hours before the wedding the decision was made to go with the outdoor plan. This was based on the latest radar data and a ton of hope that the massive blob of doom on the radar screen would track just far enough south to miss us. By 4:30 the garden was set for the ceremony, by 5:00 guests were beginning to arrive along with the impending doom of cloud cover and the first raindrops. It is at this point that mistakes were made.

There comes a point in any wedding professionals career when they have to just step back, look at your bride and say something to the effect of “It is your wedding, but I think you are making a horrible choice and I cannot be held responsible for the outcome.” This was the situation at this wedding. Despite the best advice of some of the best, most experienced wedding professionals in the area the bride would not give up her dream of a garden wedding. “We’ll just wait it out, it will pass.” Disregard the fact that these professionals had worked this venue for years, in every season and every kind of weather. They knew what could and could not be done. They also knew that there was a least a ¼ mile between the garden site and the fall back location. With a strong team and a little luck, everything could be moved and reset in about 20 minutes if needed.

At 5:30 the rain began to pick up, “Oh I just know this can’t hold up long, let’s not move the ceremony.” Sigh. At 5:40 the clouds opened and all hell broke loose. Now remember, there is a ¼ mile of garden between the reception location and the ceremony site and another ¼ mile to the fall back site. As the guests huddled in their cars and the bride cried the pros did what they could to salvage a soggy mess. By the time we had broken down the arch and unity candle table and moved them to the new site we were literally leaving puddles. Due to the heavy lightning, the chairs weren’t moved. We had the 20 minutes but the luck had been rained out. The soggy guests stood in our puddles and watched the garland drip as the musicians dried out their instruments. What a lovely ceremony.

Favors were called in and a fleet of limos and a bus arrived to transport the guest from the ceremony site to the reception site in the driving thunderstorm. All of the pieces of the reception were as they should be but let’s just say everyone’s spirits had been dampened. By 9:30 rain was reduced to a steady drizzle and the guest where on their way home.

Every now and then you need to let the dream go and face reality. I know that it is your wedding. You hired professionals for their expertise. They tell you things for a reason. The smart bride knows this and listens to them.

Wedding Dish Goes To The Bridal Market

I’m taking the Dish on the road again. First I’m going to National Bridal Market in Chicago. I love this event. This is when the designers and manufacturers do their launch for the Fall 07. High on my “To Do” list is the launch of the Sophia Tolli range. The preview pictures I have seen are stunning. I will have as much information for you as I can get. Sadly, since I’m ‘new media’ and don’t carry a press pass from one of the heavy hitter print mags some of the big designers can be a little stingy about letting me photograph. Sigh.

Next up will be tracking the trends in jewelry and accessories. Friend of the Wedding Dish, Amanda Jaron still has her hands full following the recent launch of her sterling silver line on HSN so she won’t be there. I do plan on connecting with both Tiger Lilly and Haute Bride. Their designs are always cutting edge.

As always I’ll be on the look out for anything new and interesting on the bridal front. Of course I will be blogging from the road so be sure and add Wedding Dish to you blog reader. I just love market season!
